Recurring Charges and Statement Insight vs Rocket Money

Rocket Money watches your accounts continuously and will cancel things for you; that needs you to link your bank accounts (through Plaid). Recurring Charges answers the one question — what am I paying for every month? — from a statement export, free, with no login to anything.

What Rocket Money is

Rocket Money is a personal-finance app that links to your bank and card accounts, finds recurring charges, and offers to cancel subscriptions and negotiate bills for you.

What Rocket Money costs

A free tier; Premium on a pay-what-you-want slider from $7 to $14 a month; Premium+ at $15. Bill negotiation on the free and Premium plans costs 35–60% of the first year's savings. (from their site, checked 2026-09-18)

Choose Rocket Money when

  • You want ongoing monitoring and alerts as charges post.
  • You want someone else to make the cancellation calls.
  • You want budgeting and net worth in the same app.

Choose Recurring Charges and Statement Insight when

  • You will not link your bank accounts to a third party.
  • You want the answer once — this month, this quarter — not a subscription to the answer.
  • You want to see the arithmetic: which charges, how often, what they add up to a year.

Where each fits

The annual subscription audit

Export three months from your card, drop them in, get the list with a yearly cost per line. Cancel the three you forgot about. Ten minutes, nothing installed.

Helping a parent with their statements

Their PDF statements, your browser, no app on their phone and no bank account linked to anyone.

Where the month actually went

Statement Insight reads the same files and shows the typical month, biggest merchants, fees and interest — the wider read once the recurring list is sorted.

Questions

Is Recurring Charges really free?
Yes. It runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing per use. There is no account and nothing behind a paywall inside it; Statement Insight is a separate $5 tool for people who want the full monthly read.
Does it see my bank account?
No. It reads the statement file you drop in and nothing else. Close the tab and it is gone.
How does it decide something is recurring?
The same merchant charging a similar amount on a steady rhythm — at least three times. It shows the evidence for each line so you can overrule it.
Will it cancel things for me?
No. It gives you the list, the rhythm and the yearly cost; the cancelling is yours. Rocket Money's Premium does that on your behalf if you want it done for you.
